Native American Painters in the 20th & 211st Century


Novell Morrisseau (1931-2007) is a contemporary Indigenous artist from Canada really pushed the bounties in Native contemporary art. Morrisseau never had any professional art classes or college education never finished school, he was self-taught artist. against a lot of criticism and resistance for his artist vision known for his Woodlawn style art. His was a spiritual visionary person. His work came to him naturally in his visions, dreams and life experience. His artwork stood out because his subjects were woodland animals, people, dreams and life experiences. Defined by his broad, thick, blacklines, bold and bright colors, and his subject had sense of space, x-ray and his effortless flow in his art.

Some of the sample to share with further generation are his multiply artwork exhibit today and talk about even today, Morrisseau was an unforgettable artist, and his work will be remembered for years to come.






Who is Dorothy Dunn? Who was education in Chicago later moved to New Mexico and taught at a Navajo school.  Dororthy was a - Non-Native Art instructor was inspired by native art, founded the Santa Fe Indian School Her style of teaching featured heavy outlines fields of color. Some of her students included Pablita Velarde, Joe Herrera both painters. She also had student well none for sculptors such as Allan Houser her style of teaching was considered "Studio Style" flat painting. The school was closed in 1975 partly due to natives' opinion on her being non- native and her intentions on wealth and gain. Many of Dorothy Dunn students were noted for their artwork today. This is work of Allan Houser who has a museum with his art,




 IAIA- Institute of American Indian Arts is a public tribal land-grant College founded in1962 location in Santa Fe is Public tribal land- grant collage. And is still striving today. Native based, board of directors have native roots. IAIA is one of the top native colleges today. Students from 36 states,91 tribes with a headcount 979
