In this blog I will example what Appropriation is and misrepresentation and the importance it has in the Indians Arts and Craft Act which was passed in 1990. This is so crazy because before 1990 Native American Art was being used (appropriation) without one's permission basically benefiting either financially or stealing the item and making it theirs. Example 1: going into a shop buying an item and putting it on Ebay as their handmade native item, without permission of the person who designed it/ made it. Example 2: Going to a powwow and getting it from there basket, without permission of the person who made it, and selling it as their own. Misrepresentation of Culture is an action of offense to that culture an Example: Sports teams using a Native American as a mascot.

So finally in 1990 a law was passed to protect a person from the misuse and appropriation of Native American artwork or craft. Making it illegal to offer, display for sale any arts or crafts and falsely suggest or claim that it Indian made product, truth -in advertising law. It amazing that this is broken so many times, as recent as last year 11/21 a man in Washington was selling his products in a shop making extremely large amount of money on items that were not Native made, along with this man was a well know establishment selling and misrepresenting a Native craft.

Cultural appreciation and Cultural exchange: Key word is Intention Example wearing henna to an Indian friend's wedding would be a sign of apricating their cultural. Example of exchange would be if a person went to a powwow and exchanges beadwork for a painting.

"Native 1American" and "Indian" can only be used to label a product created by a member of a state - or - federally- recognized tribe or nation. Also: price and labeling, hallmark and signatures quality of the materials. Price matters if it to good to be true art it probably isn't. Buyers beware below is some links.

  1. First off, I like that you start with aanii! I think that it's interesting that you bring up Native American mascots in sports. While many people could agree that appropriation is wrong, that pool of people would decrease if you asked them if using Natives as mascots is wrong. I also like that you bring up that this is still an issue, of non-Natives selling cultural significant items. While this Act is around, there is still an issue of appropriation and misrepresentation. I think you captured the problems faced by Indian Country really well.
